The Nature Range

I created a series of mixed-media 3D illustrations depicting the beauty of small pockets of nature. These artworks are intended to encourage viewers to take a more mindful approach to life, taking time to appreciate the beauty of nature in unexpected places.

Breach (2023)

Calico, merino wool, embroidery thread, hessian, wire, masking tape, card, acrylic paint, alcohol markers, coloured pencil.

This piece represents how nature cannot be contained by man-made imposed rules, it grows past its assigned areas into something beautifully unexpected. It is inspired by a crop of moss and ivy that covered the top of a crumbling stone wall – it was not meant to grow there, and yet it flourished. It is a testament to the determination of nature to grow and thrive regardless of where it is.

Frost (2024)

Calico, merino wool, embroidery threads, card, watercolour, coloured pencil, acrylic paint, glitter, bind wire, wire, recycled beads

This piece is inspired by the layer of frost that covers nature after a cold spell. It is a celebration of the beauty of frosty leaves and frozen cobwebs, as they become like jewels as they sparkle in the sun. It is also a portrayal of the effect of changing seasons on nature and the beauty of transformation.

Growing (2024)

Merino wool, embroidery thread, hessian, wire, card, paper, watercolour, coloured pencil, acrylic paint, alcohol marker, preserved moss, expanding foam, bind wire, recycled beads.

This piece explores the beauty of natural growth and captures the motion and energy associated with transformation. It is bursting with life and energy, with plants growing in lots of different directions and vines and roots expanding below the surface. The inclusion of real Irish moss adds realism to this exploration of growing nature.

Motion (2024)

Merino wool, embroidery thread, hessian, bind wire, card, watercolour, coloured pencil, acrylic paint, preserved moss.

This piece explores nature in motion and is inspired by ferns blowing in the wind. It is also inspired by the motion of nature growing, and how it is always moving outwards towards what it needs to thrive. It contains real Irish moss as a reference to how it constantly spreads throughout the natural world and is a champion of growth.

Hydrangea (2024)

Card, tracing paper, acrylic paint

This piece is a depiction of a hydrangea petal skeleton and a celebration of the intricacies of the natural world. It consists of several layers of hand-cut card that are combined together to create a 3D illustration of the petal skeleton’s veins, textures and holes. It is a reminder of how nature is beautiful at every stage of its life cycle, even when it is decaying.

Autumn Ivy (2024)

Calico, merino wool, embroidery thread, wire, card, watercolour, acrylic paint, recycled beads

This piece is an exploration of the changing colours of nature as it comes into autumn. It is an appreciation of the constant change and transformation of the natural world, which can be seen in even small pockets of nature. It is also a celebration of the diversity of nature in terms of colour, shape and texture.

The Cycle (2024)

Merino wool, embroidery thread, hessian, wire, masking tape, scrim, card, paper, acrylic paint, alcohol markers, preserved moss, expanding foam

This piece is inspired by the cycle of decay and growth in nature, and how both sides of the cycle are equally beautiful. The central design is inspired by oyster mushrooms and their growth from decaying substances, like dead trees. The swirling grass and the inclusion of real Irish moss references the beauty of new growth and the cycle of life.
